U.S. Request for Release 8 Ahmadinejad Iranian Citizens

New York - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on the government of the United States (U.S.) release according to which eight Iranians were arrested in the U.S. illegally.

Ahmadinejad warned that his country has shown signs of humanity freed last week by a U.S. woman since July 2009 who were arrested earlier.

It was said by Ahmadinejad in an interview on ABC television station as reported by news agency Reuters on Monday (9/20/2010). Ahmadinejad currently resides in New York, USA to attend the UN General Assembly annual session.

On 14 September, Iran frees Sarah Shourd (32), one of three U.S. citizens detained in Iran for more than a year on suspicion of espionage. 32-year-old woman arrived in the U.S. on Sunday, September 19 local time.

Ahmadinejad called the release Shourd as a "great humanitarian gesture."

"So I'm sure it's not wrong to ask that the U.S. government should provide cues humanity by freeing Iranian citizens were arrested and detained illegally in the United States here," said Ahmadinejad.

Shourd was arrested near the border of Iran and Iraq in July 2009 and with two of her male colleagues, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal. According to their families, all three were doing climbing a mountain in northern Iraq at the time.
